Atuila's Story - Foster Child to Youth Mentor

Written by Mikaela Rae Atoigue

Since 2009, Life 360 Network, Inc. has worked to provide positive outlets for at-risk youth and young adults to help themselves and their communities flourish. This work has proven more than successful in Life 360 Junior Life Coach, Atuila Mauga. When Atuila was young, her mother was incarcerated and her father was absent from the picture. As a result, her and her siblings were placed into the foster care system. She was only ten years old when she found herself leaving her home in Mayor Wright’s Housing on a school bus headed to a Life 360 event. At the very beginning of her story, many may have worried how this young girl’s life would have turned out. Some may have written her off as simply another statistic or a victim of the system.

Today, nearly thirteen years later, she’s beaten the odds that were stacked against her. Atuila Mauga graduated high school and is now a mentor to dozens of youth who reside in the housing projects where she was raised. In addition, she is a full-time youth counselor at one of Hawaii’s shelters for at-risk youth where she continues to pass on what was taught to her in her many years involved in Life 360 Network. When asked how Life 360 has helped better her life she said, “Life 360 gave me a sense of security, purpose, and family in my life by providing

a safe place for me to go when the world around me was chaotic.” Not only is she flourishing as a young woman, but she continues to dedicate her time to help those around her grow in the same way she did. At Life 360 Network, we give youth and young adults the opportunity to be the change, and we are so proud of Atuila for living out that mission.
